Progression of Skills

PE at Ardley Hill Academy

At Ardley Hill Academy, classes are given a “PE day” whereby children come into school in their PE kit on their selected day and will take part in PE lessons for a morning or afternoon. The teaching of PE at our school follows closely the four main aims of the PE national curriculum. These aims are:

  1. To develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  2. To enable children to be physically active for sustained periods
  3. Engage in competitive sports and activities
  4. To lead healthy active lives.

Curriculum intent

Our PE curriculum provides children with the opportunities to engage in a wide range of physical activities designed to develop competency in the fundamental movement skills.

The curriculum offers all pupils the chance to challenge themselves to achieve and improve both as an individual and as part of a team.

Our curriculum teaches children to engage and be active participants in their own learning, directing them to be responsible for their own health and well-being and understand the importance of exercise.

Children will develop their social skills whilst also taking part in competitive activities both within and outside of school.

Upon leaving Ardley Hill Academy, all pupils have the understanding of what it means to lead an active and healthy lifestyle but also an enjoyment of sport and the knowledge of how to develop their skills further.

Intra school competition

This year Ardley Hill will be hosting its own Intra school sports competition for Years 2 to 6. Every half term each class will compete against their corresponding year group class in a different sport. Each sport will be a particular sport that all year groups have been working on in their PE lessons. The winning class of each Year 6 event will also go on to compete against an Ardley Hill staff team!

At the end of the year, the class from each year group with the most points will be crowned champions. There will also be a prize for the winners of Year 6’s vs The Ardley Hill staff team.

The different sports are as follows:

Autumn 1 – Dodgeball

Autumn 2 – Football

Spring 1 – Hockey

Spring 2 – Tag Rugby

Summer 1 – Cricket

Fitter Future

At Ardley Hill Academy we try and put a whole school focus on being as active as possible whether that be in school or at home. Fitter Future is a scheme that helps us achieve this focus by providing online exercises that can be completed both in the classroom and at home.

Children are given their own login details to make home access easy whilst all classes and pupils are monitored for their usage. Rewards are given for best effort from individuals and a Fitter Future trophy is given at the end of each half term for the most workouts completed by a single class.

We as a school offer a wide range of extra-curricular clubs both at lunchtime and after school. The clubs are led by teachers and external coaches, but we also look to promote leadership skills in the children by allowing them to run their own sports clubs. This experience proves invaluable for the children as they develop new skills and a desire to coach whilst providing a fun and engaging club for other children.

The sports clubs we have on offer are as follows:

Tuesday Hotshots Basketball -Years 3&4 (8:30-9:00) Think sport Dodgeball (12:30-13:00 & 15:30-16:30) All Year groups
Wednesday Hotshots Basketball – Years 5&6 (8:30-9:00) Girls Football – Years 3-6
Thursday Multi-sports – Pupil led – Years 4,5,6 (12:30 – 13:00) Boys Football – Years 3-6
Friday Multi-sports – Pupil led – Years 1,2,3 (12:30 – 13:00)

Team Teaching

As teachers of PE, we are constantly looking at ways of developing our own knowledge of PE teaching. At the school, we work alongside a number of fantastic external companies to help provide the best PE curriculum we can whilst also expanding the breadth of knowledge our staff have. Here are some of the companies we are proud to teach alongside.
